Some of that advice is useful. Personal security belongs in a living-alone safety plan. It just isn't the whole plan.

There's a strange assumption built into the phrase "living alone." We use the word alone to describe who shares your home, and then sometimes treat it as though it describes your entire life. It doesn't. Living alone tells us something about your household, but remarkably little about your relationships, your social life, or how connected you feel to other people.

Living Alone Safely
When you live alone, you don't have another person under the same roof to grab the emergency kit, check whether you're okay, take care of the dog, find the flashlight, call your sister, or notice that something has gone wrong. That doesn't make living alone inherently unsafe. It simply means an emergency plan for one person has to solve a slightly different set of problems.

Safety Check-Ins
A safety check-in app is a simple way to make sure someone knows when you might need help. You establish a regular time or schedule for confirming that you're okay. When you check in as expected, nothing else needs to happen. If you miss the check-in and don't respond within the app's allotted time, the system can notify one or more people you've chosen.

I love living alone. I like deciding what happens in my own space, coming home and finding everything exactly where I left it, and choosing when I want company and when I want quiet. I can eat dinner at 4:30 or 9:00, spend Saturday surrounded by friends, and spend Sunday happily doing my own thing. None of that feels lonely to me.

If you live alone, you may have had this thought at some point: What if something happens to me and nobody knows? When you live with another person, their presence creates a safety mechanism you may barely notice. If your normal routine suddenly changes, someone is likely to notice. When you live alone, you may need to create that mechanism intentionally.

Living Alone Safely
Living alone has a lot going for it. You decide how your space works, how you spend your time, when you socialize, and what your daily routines look like. But living alone also changes one practical part of emergency planning: there may not be another person in the house to notice when something goes wrong. That doesn't mean living alone is unsafe. It means your safety plan needs to account for something households with multiple people can sometimes take for granted: someone noticing.
